世界羽联或决定总决赛引入外卡制度，这将使得当年的世界冠军、奥运冠军可以持外卡参与总决赛。不过前提是未获得总决赛资格的世界冠军、奥运冠军的世界排名需在20名以内，并且协会参与名额的限制依旧有效（单项最多两人/对）。

1.2 总决赛的邀请
1.2.1 The highest ranked eight players/pairs in the Superseries Standings list will be subject to the following (1.2.2 & 1.2.3) receive invitations to compete in the BWF World Superseries Finals.
1.2.1 在超级赛排名中最高的八名/对运动员，在不违反1.2.2及1.2.3的前提下，将获得总决赛邀请。
1.2.2 BWF will grant a wild card invitation to reigning World Champions in a non-Olympic year, and to the reigning Olympic Champions in the Olympic year, if they do not qualify as of right via the Superseries standings list, are in the top 20 of the World Rankings on the date of invitation by BWF, and subject to 1.2.3. Where BWF grant such a wild card entry the number of players/pairs in the event will not exceed 8.
1.2.2 在非奥年的世界冠军或奥运年的奥运冠军，如果其在世界羽联发放总决赛邀请的时候位列世界排名前20位，且根据超级赛排名未获得总决赛资格，在不违反1.2.3的前提下，世界羽联将给予外卡。算上外卡，各单项运动员不能超过8名/对（按：也就是说外卡发放可能使得某单项一名/对前八运动员无缘总决赛，一般就是最后那一名/对）。
1.2.3 Players/pairs will qualify unless a total of two players/pairs from any one Member Association would thereby be exceeded in that event.
1.2.3 一个单项一个协会只能有2名/对运动员参赛（按：某协会在某单项即便有更多的运动员达到参加总决赛的资格也最多只能派2名/对运动员参赛；还有就是说外卡发放可能使得外卡运动员所在协会某单项一名/对前八运动员无缘总决赛，假设该协会该单项已经有了2名/队运动员入选总决赛）。
